OSHKOSH, Wis. (WBAY) - Police in Oshkosh say they are already seeing a 34% increase in car break-ins this year compared to 2024, and that number continues to climb.

Officers call it “car hopping”, and it’s a trend impacting dozens of drivers around the city.

A fun night out in October for Ellie Winkle and her friends nearly took an unexpected turn.

“We were going through all the Pub Crawl video to see if anything funny happened, and we happened to see him going in the trunk,” says Winkle, who’s a student at UW-Oshkosh.

Captured on camera was a man walking straight toward her boyfriend’s unlocked car, opening the trunk, looking inside, and then walking away.
