(CNN) - Honda is recalling hundreds of thousands of its Civic models over a wheel defect that could cause the tires to detach from the vehicle.
According to the recall, it affects more than 400,000 Civics from 2016 through 2021 that are equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the problem stems from steel lug seat inserts that were not properly pressed into the aluminum wheel surface when they were made.
That flaw can cause the wheel nuts to loosen and the wheel to separate from the car while it is moving, creating a serious crash risk.
Dealers will inspect and replace wheels and hubs if needed at no cost to owners.
