BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) - Landlords in sections of Binghamton have received a letter in the mail alerting them that they will be required to sign up for a lead rental registry.
The letter went out to over 2,000 rental property owners within the zip codes of 13901 and 13905 which encompass the city's downtown, Northside, Westside and First Ward.
It's the result of legislation passed in Albany identifying 25 communities in the state at high risk of lead exposure to children.
Once they register, inspectors from the Broome County Health Department will come to each apartment to conduct an inspection and test for chipped lead paint and paint dust.
