BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Bangor High School has the oldest Army JROTC program in the country. Recently, the organization learned it lays claim to another piece of history: the nation’s first female Battalion Commander.

Sandra Harvey was among the inductees Friday at the high school, where the JROTC held its fourth annual Distinguished Veteran’s Honor Roll ceremony.

“It’s a huge honor to finally meet the first female Battalion Commander,” said C/LTC Alexis Blue, Bangor High School JROTC.

Harvey graduated with the Bangor High School Class of 1975. She says the year she started high school was the first year girls could join JROTC.

Her induction into the Honor Roll Friday started with a chance encounter at a lacrosse game with Darryl Lyon.
