IOWA CITY, Iowa —
University of Iowa students received a Hawk Alert on Friday afternoon, urging them to shelter in place after gunshots were reported near campus.
The initial Hawk Alert was sent out at 1:51 p.m., noting that there had been gunshots in the area of E Burlington Street and S Governor Street and that a suspect was heading eastbound. A follow-up alert sent a few minutes later said the suspect fled westbound on foot.
The Iowa City Police Department shared on social media that it is actively investigating a shots fired incident in the 900 block of E. Burlington Street.
A Hawk Alert update sent out at 2:15 p.m. further clarified that the incident originated off campus and that students should remain vigilant, continue shelter in place and report suspicious activity to 911.
