OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Washington State Department of Transportation launched a new system along Interstate 5, providing real-time and predictive information to help truck drivers locate available parking spaces at rest areas and weigh stations up to four hours in advance.

Deadly crashes caused by illegal parking and exhausted truck drivers prompted state officials to seek solutions. Nationwide, there is only one truck parking space for every 11 trucks on the road, and 75% of Washington's truck drivers report problems finding safe parking at least once weekly.

Under the Truck Parking Information Management System (TPIMS), drivers who download the Drivewyze or ParkerTruck app can get updates on parking availability, and in some instances, predictions on where and when spaces will be availab
