GREENWOOD COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Greenwood County Council voted on a moratorium on accepting new roads in the county system in a meeting on Tuesday.

The Greenwood County Public Works Director, Rob Russian, said in the meeting that there are over 1,200 miles of roadway in the county, and new subdivisions are falling short of bringing in the revenue needed to maintain the roads added to the county system.

A local road fee is what mostly funds the additions, and the funding is falling well short of expectations to resurface some roads, Russian said.

He recommended a five-year moratorium to help get funding levels in line and get a pavement cycle to a “reasonable amount” of 25 years for resurfacing.
