BILLINGS, Mont. – Homeowners and long-term rental property owners in Montana may soon find relief on their property tax bills through a new state program. However, they must take action to benefit.

The Montana Department of Revenue announced that the enrollment window for the new Homestead Tax Exemption will open on December 1. This opportunity is available for both homeowners and those who rent out properties long-term.

Bryce Kaatz, Property Assessment Division Chief at the Montana Department of Revenue, explained the eligibility criteria.

"A property the person owns and resides in for at least seven months of the year is their principal residence, and then properties that are used as long term rentals, so rented to tenants as the residence for at least two periods of 28 days or longer
