Cases of mouth cancer in England have soared to an unprecedented level, with HPV contracted through oral sex emerging as a key driver of the surge amongst younger individuals.

Fresh figures published today by NHS England reveal that annual mouth cancer diagnoses in England have climbed to 9,293 – representing a 37% rise over the last decade.

Fatalities have also increased, with 2,970 individuals succumbing to the disease – a 42% jump compared with a decade ago.

The Oral Health Foundation charity has described the escalation as "deeply concerning".
