HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The state has activated the Hawaii National Guard to support statewide efforts and large-scale community food distribution programs across the state.

It comes as a result of the ongoing federal government shutdown and the suspension of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) .

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green and Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke requested Adjutant Gen. Stephen Logan to place members of the state’s National Guard on active duty Friday morning.

The state said that so far, Guard members have helped transport donations collected at public libraries, which was led by Lt. Gov. Luke with support from the Hawaii State Public Library System.
