ONE REPUBLICAN who’s been in the ring with both former U.S. Sens. John E. Sununu and Scott Brown — ex-Sen. Bob Smith — has picked sides, and he’s with Brown in the 2026 GOP Senate primary.
During a telephone interview from his Florida home, Smith, 84, said the most decisive factor was his the belief that Brown represents the “grassroots conservative” base of the New Hampshire GOP while Sununu is the pick of the Republican establishment in the Granite State and Washington.
Smith admitted the decision of the National Republican Senatorial Committee to quickly endorse Sununu really rankled him.
“To me this is what’s wrong with both parties today, too many bigshots on the left and the right trying to decide for the voters who should represent them. That’s wrong,” Smith said.
