A lifeguard in Hawaii is fighting for his life after a shark attack at a popular beach. Chance Swanson, 33, was found unconscious in the water, surrounded by blood, and has sustained severe injuries to his leg. He was quickly transported to a hospital for urgent medical care. Swanson's mother, Rose Keaweamahi-Hoovler, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with his medical expenses. She described her son as a well-respected lifeguard and surfer, stating, "Chance is a shining star, always happy and smiling." She expressed gratitude for the support and prayers received, noting that doctors are "uncertain" about his recovery, which is expected to be lengthy. Kalani Vierra, Chief of the Kauai Ocean Safety Bureau, reported that lifeguards spotted Swanson floating in the water. He explained, "The lifeguards looked with the binoculars and noticed that Chance was floating on his back with a big red stain around him. They went out immediately, and obviously they noticed that he was attacked by a shark, and they put on a tourniquet right away." This incident follows another shark attack in July, where a 7-year-old boy was attacked by a 13-foot shark on the French Polynesian island of Nuku Hiva. Witnesses stated that the boy was playing with friends when he jumped from a dock and was bitten. A firefighter who treated the boy remarked, "I'm 35 years old and this is the first time I've seen this. These were long and deep wounds." The child was initially treated at a local hospital before being airlifted to a larger facility in Tahiti, approximately 1,500km (930 miles) away. Shark attacks are uncommon in French Polynesia and are often associated with activities like spearfishing or feeding sharks, which is illegal. As the community rallies around Chance Swanson, the incidents highlight the dangers that can arise in waters known for their marine life.
