The poor conditions at the Sudbury Jail may be enough incentive to keep Jason Desjardins on the straight and narrow.

“He tells me it’s pretty horrible at the jail,” defence lawyer William Beach told Justice Tanya Farkouh Martin, who gave Desjardins a time-served sentence. “Lots of shutdowns, three to a cell. He cut himself in the shower the other day.”

Desjardins, before being sentenced, told Justice Farkouh Martin that “as (Mr.) Beach said, the jail is not a comfortable situation … It’s a bad situation I don’t plan on returning to.”

Desjardins, 46, had pleaded guilty to theft of a motor vehicle, being unlawfully in a dwelling, and breach of a release order.

The first two offences dated back to 2023.
