Arrangements have been finalized for Emily Prather, a 28-year-old daycare worker remembered for her warmth and compassion, who died following a fire at an apartment complex in South Jersey on Saturday, Nov. 1.
Prather, who was initially hospitalized following the Autumn Ridge blaze in Gloucester Township, was later pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the fire. Six firefighters were also injured and remain in stable condition, police said.
The Unforgotten Haven, a nonprofit assisting Emily's husband, Kyle, in Blackwood, said Emily died alongside her dog.
Born in Philadelphia, Emily grew up in the area before moving to Bellmawr during her teenage years. She later settled in Blackwood with Kyle, where they built a loving life together, according to her obituary on the Gardner Funeral Home website.
A 2015 graduate of Triton Regional High School, Emily worked at Tutor Time in Sewell and several other daycares and diners throughout her life. She was known for her deep love for children and her ability to make every child feel “loved, safe, and understood,” her obituary said.
Emily is survived by her husband, Kyle; her parents, Susan (Jim) and Stephen (Kim); her brothers, Stephen (Meghan) and Alex (Nicole); her in-laws, Jerald and Claudette Prather; and her extended family of siblings-in-law, nieces, nephews, and close friends.
“Emily was a light in every life she touched, full of kindness, laughter, and love,” Dom Prather wrote on a fundraiser created to support her family. “Her strength, faith, and gentle heart will be forever remembered by everyone who knew her.”
More than $36,000 had been raised on a GoFundMe for Emily's family as of press time.
A viewing will be held Monday, Nov. 10, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Gardner Funeral Home in Runnemede. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., with interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Blackwood.
