Ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking, Toledo City Council recognized Tom Walton, a retired editor of The Blade, for his work as a crew member on the ship.

“Tom, you represent a hardworking person who worked as a young man on the ship and very tragically lost your uncle and 28 other individuals,” Councilman George Sarantou said. “We thank you for being here today.”

On Wednesday, Toledo City Council unanimously passed a resolution commemorating 50 years of remembrance and honoring the legacy of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank on Nov. 10, 1975, and took the lives of all 29 crew members aboard.

The resolution was sponsored by Councilmen Cerssandra McPherson, Theresa Morris, and Mr. Sarantou.

Mr. Walton was a porter on the ship several years before its sinking. T
