ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI -- A stretch of U.S. 131 in Allegan County has reopened after an overweight truck struck an overpass.

A piece of heavy machinery hauled by a semi trailer traveling southbound struck an overpass at 146th Avenue on Monday, Nov. 3. The impact prompted U.S. 131 South between 100th Street and 142nd Street to close for several days while officials assessed the damage.

The overpass remains closed, according to a press release from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department.

John Richard, a Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson, described the piece of equipment as an excavator.

The overpass has a signed height of 14 feet, 2 inches, but the clearance is actually about 14 feet, 8 inches where the strike happened, Richard said.
