HILLSBORO, Ore. — Emotional testimony from a Hillsboro teenager who spoke about his fears over the safety of his family and neighbors underscored the community's plea for leaders to do more to protect immigrants.

"I'm scared for my parents to walk out there, to walk out their house, because I might not be able to say goodbye to them if they go to work," Manny Chavez said during a Tuesday city council meeting.

Chavez is one of many who are pleading for Hillsboro leaders for further action as federal agents , often masked and unidentified, across Oregon and the U.S. increasingly swoop in to detain immigrants, many in the U.S. legally, including with valid visas .
