VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Men experiencing homelessness face major health challenges, and often, a lack of access to care makes things even harder.

This weekend, the Virginia Beach Housing Resource Center and ODU Community Care teamed up to change that. Their Men’s Health Day event offered free medical screenings, education, and resources exclusively for men experiencing unsheltered homelessness.

At the center on North Witchduck Road, health care came directly to those who need it most, with screenings for prostate and colorectal cancer, STIs, diabetes, and hypertension, as well as physicals and preventive health education.

Tammy Speerhas, chief operating officer of ODU Community Care says the goal is to help men get ahead of health problems before they become life-threatening.
