POLK COUNTY, Texas — Area residents are being asked to evacuate their homes due to a compromised dam at Carter Lake in Camden Saturday night as officials work to lower the lake level.
The Polk County Office of Emergency Management (PCOEM) said the Carter Lake dam in Camden is compromised and there is damage to the embankment of the dam. Officials reported an estimated 8-inch hole in the earthen embankment with a steady flow of water being released.
"Property owners are using high-volume pumps to lower the level of the lake below the damaged area in the embankment," a spokesperson for PCOEM said. "Progress in lowering the lake level has been made, and property owners advised us that the flow of water through the hole in the embankment has lessened."
