Port Colborne Lions Club member Scott Wolfe had finally convinced the organization’s board to take a chance and hold a standalone Doughnut Day.

The tasty, deep-fried doughnuts had been a hit with the public during the Lions Carnival during the spring. People would wait in line for hours in anticipation of grabbing a box of doughnuts.

But as Wolfe, referred to by his fellow Lions as the Doughnut King, and his group prepared for the first Doughnut Day in 2017, the rain was pouring down. It was cold and dreary.

“It was the most disgusting day,” said Wolfe, who worked at Inco in Port Colborne. “We had worked all night (preparing the doughnuts). The rain was coming down sideways. I thought ‘Oh my God, nobody will show up.’ ”
