EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Officials with the Evansville Civic Theatre took to Facebook to say a heartfelt goodbye to the group’s original artistic director.
In the post, officials eulogized Dick Engbers, saying he could be considered the patriarch or the architect of modern theatre in Evansville.
Engbers started his work with the Theatre being cast as Yellow Feather in “Little Mary Sunshine” in 1965, then continued working in the Theatre for the next 10 years.
Officials say Engbers was instrumental in securing the now iconic Civic Theatre at the corner of Fulton and Columbia, converting the old Columbia theatre into the place that still houses the Theatre.
Engbers was named the first full-time artistic director in 1977, which he held until retiring in 2004.
