Since it was formed nearly four years ago, the county Conviction Integrity Unit has resulted in one exonerated person and the affirmation of 121 convictions, according to the unity’s chief.

The unit, formed by Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido in January 2022, is headed by former long-time defense attorney Gail Pamukov, who spoke last month in front of the county Board of Commissioners at the prosecutor’s budget hearing.

Pamukov was asked to speak about the unit by board Chair Joe Sabatini of Macomb Township.

Pamukov said the unit has accepted a review of 174 cases since it was created, and each case requires a substantial amount of time to look at, some of them containing thousands of pages of documents.
