Winter showed up early in Western Maryland, and the first snow of the season has officially arrived.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore–Washington, snow began falling across the Alleghenies late Sunday, Nov. 9, with reports of 1 to 2 inches near Bittinger in Garrett County.
Snow showers were expected to continue through daybreak Tuesday, with 3 to 6 inches possible along higher western slopes.
The National Weather Service said the snow came on the heels of a strong cold front that dropped temperatures 15 to 25 degrees from Sunday’s highs.
Most areas were seeing highs in the 40s and low 50s on Monday, while the mountains are sitting in the 20s and 30s — a full preview of winter ahead.
Photos shared by an NWS spotter captured a classic first snow scene — empty roads dusted white, bare trees covered in flurries, and a quiet fog rolling through Garrett County’s back roads.
“Behind a strong cold front, today's highs will have fallen by around 15 to 25 degrees from yesterday's readings,” forecasters said. “Upslope snow showers continue along the Alleghenies.”
