Northern Michigan saw its first notable snowfall of the 2025-26 season over the weekend.
Sean Christensen, a staff meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Gaylord, said snowfall totals were highest in the Leelanau Peninsula, where 10 inches fell in some spots.
"We got some cold air and northerly winds. For us in Northern Michigan the first wave (of snow) was Friday night with the majority on Saturday," he said.
Petoskey accumulated five inches, while Cheboygan received 4.2 inches. In the Gaylord area, Elmira had three inches while south of the city saw 1.7 inches. Sault Ste. Marie had 1.7 inches of snow, with most of it coming on Saturday.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Negaunee, located near Marquette in the north-central portion of the Upper Peninsula, saw 10.
