LINCOLN, Neb. —
Gov. Jim Pillen welcomed dozens of retired and current Marines to his Lincoln residence for the 250th anniversary of the creation of the United States Marine Corps on Monday.
"Happy birthday!" Pillen said to applause and shouts of "Oorah."
"Everybody in this room is incredibly humble, but when it comes to your service, please don't be humble," Pillen said. "Please share your stories. Make sure your neighbors make sure your children, make sure your grandchildren know."
A brief ceremony concluded with the traditional cutting of a cake with a saber.
"This is magnificent," Joel Rogers, who served as a Marine and helps lead the Nebraska wing of the Marine Corps League, said. "I feel so honored just to be a small part of the Marine Corps."
