GREENSBORO, N.C. — A $2,000 check showing up in your mailbox sounds nice, but there are a lot of questions about how realistic that idea really is.
Former President Donald Trump is once again talking about sending Americans rebate checks. He says the money would come from tariffs .
“We're going to issue a dividend to our middle-income people and lower income people of about $2,000,” Trump said on Monday.
Trump’s proposal hinges on using money collected from higher tariffs as a funding source. But according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, there’s a gap between what’s being collected and what would be needed. The nonpartisan group estimates the checks could cost nearly $600 billion, while tariff revenue sits closer to $350 billion. Read their full analysis here.
