Pierre Poilievre's recent remarks on the Northern Perspectives podcast, where he criticized RCMP leadership as "despicable" for allegedly covering up Liberal missteps, continue to create controversy for the federal Conservative leader. Despite this, Poilievre praised his party for its unity, stating, "We’ve had very little dissent over the past year. When was the last time you saw an internal fight? This isn’t the Jerry Springer show; we’re not throwing chairs at each other."
However, this assertion came before a reported incident involving Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer and chief whip Chris Warkentin. They allegedly confronted former Conservative MP Chris d’Entremont, calling him a "snake" for negotiating a position with the Liberals. D’Entremont made this claim, while the Opposition Leader’s Office stated that Scheer and Warkentin entered calmly and that Scheer spoke in a "calm and measured voice."
The situation escalated when the OLO labeled d’Entremont a "liar" for allegedly deceiving his colleagues and constituents regarding his bid for the deputy Speaker of the House. This turmoil follows Edmonton MP Matt Jeneroux's meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, which raised speculation about Jeneroux potentially crossing the floor. Jeneroux denied any coercion, stating he was not pressured to resign his seat.
Some MPs have expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership's approach. One anonymous MP remarked, "Pierre and Scheer’s past actions are coming home to roost. They have been acting like bitter juveniles." Scheer’s accusations against the Liberals for engaging in "undemocratic" practices were also criticized, with some pointing out his previous role in the Harper government, which appointed David Emerson as a minister shortly after he was elected as a Liberal MP in 2006.
Questions arise about Poilievre's awareness of the discontent within his caucus. Reports indicate he is reaching out to party members to bolster support. An anonymous MP noted, "He may get through it, but most people have concluded the party under him won’t win." While some predict no further defections, they do not rule out colleagues sitting as Independents until Poilievre's leadership is challenged.
Conversely, another MP expressed optimism, stating, "I don’t think it’s fatal. I still believe (Poilievre) has a path." Despite the challenges, Poilievre remains a contender. Polls show the Conservative Party is within five points of the Liberals, and he retains strong backing among grassroots supporters. However, his comments regarding the RCMP and the party's internal conflicts may continue to overshadow his leadership.
