PHOENIX — A Phoenix police officer involved in a car crash earlier this year is facing criminal charges.

The police department announced Wednesday that one of its officers had been charged by a grand jury with endangerment and aggravated assault in relation to a traffic collision reported on March 14 near Buckeye Road and Interstate 17.

At the time of the crash, authorities reported that injuries had been sustained by the parties involved in the collision.

Following an investigation into the incident, police said the involved officer had allegedly been speeding more than 50 mph over the posted speed limit.

"This is a serious matter. Our officers are expected to uphold the same laws they enforce, and when standards are not met, we have an obligation to act," the agency wrote in a stat
