CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Residents in Carteret County may get a new bridge over the Bogue Sound.

Project 323 is the “Mid-Island Bridge over Bogue Sound” proposal, which seeks to add a new bridge connecting Highway 24 and 58.

Part of the county’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan , the NCDOT proposal maps out a two-lane structure, featuring a bike and pedestrian lane to serve as an emergency vehicular route. It also plans to ease growing traffic congestion.

“In the summer months, it definitely gets bumper-to-bumper. There’s a lot of congestion, and we really could use a pressure relief valve of some form,” Carteret Community College student Isaac Lester said.
