NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Bobby Sanchez was sworn in as New Britain’s first Latino mayor on Wednesday, a historic moment celebrated with music and cheers at New Britain High School.
A day of celebration preceded the start of Sanchez’s term, which included the inauguration of new Board of Education members, aldermen, and the city’s newly elected treasurer.
The final swearing-in, conducted by former New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart, marked what Sanchez described as the fulfillment of his lifelong dream.
“As a young Puerto Rican kid - growing up in New Britain this moment is surreal for me - my parents worked incredibly hard and built a life for us here all in the pursuit of the American Dream,” Sanchez said.
