HARTFORD, Conn. — A special round of voting is underway in Connecticut, as state legislators engage in a two-day special session.

Their goal is to prepare the state for eventual federal funding cuts to social programs as a result of the Big Beautiful Bill that was passed in July.

Scott McLean, a political science professor at Quinnipiac University, said this session is also focused on what will and will not be funded if there is another federal government shutdown.

"I think it will establish what the rainy day fund can and cannot be used for. Yes, [it can be used for] bipartisan support for supporting anti-poverty programs but maybe not for other things, like higher ed or supporting local nonprofits," McLean said.
