BATTLE GROUND — The Hockinson girls soccer team still had its edge.

The Hawks shook off a loss in the district championship match four days prior to beat Port Angeles 1-0 in the first round of the Class 2A state playoffs on Wednesday.

Head coach Tony Ayala believed his team was playing its best soccer of the season heading into a 3-0 loss to state No. 1 seed Columbia River last Saturday.

Any worries that loss would hang over the Hawks were dispelled early Wednesday at District Stadium. Kaili Humphrey scored the game’s lone goal in the eighth minute.

“You’re always worried as a coach whether that game is going to take them down a notch,” Ayala said. “But our energy was great. They trained really well this week. You could feel the buzz today.”
