FREMONT, Neb. —
Dev Sookram was officially sworn in as Fremont mayor on Wednesday.
Sookram has held the role since Thursday last week, after Former Mayor Joey Spellerberg resigned to become Nebraska's State Treasurer.
The swearing in was at the beginning of Wednesday's council meeting.
Per state law , the city council president becomes mayor to fulfil a vacancy, the Dodge County Election Commissioner told KETV last week.
State law would also allow the city council to call a special election to fill the vacancy.
Sookram sat down with KETV prior to Wednesday's meeting.
He said he was "very surprised" to learn he would become mayor of Fremont. That happened a week ago Monday.
That day, Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen appointed Spellerberg as state treasurer.
