A spokesperson for the government has responded to a petition calling for a referendum on exiting the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

There have been a number of calls for a referendum on this issue in recent years, since Brexit passed into law in January, 2020.

Once considered a fringe idea, it has become a defining issue for political parties over the last five years.

The most recent petition states: "We want the government to give our population the right to decide if we are to leave the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

"We think it is antiquated and not fit for the current world we live in."
