The State Senate passed a major housing bill early Friday morning that is meant to address housing shortages.

Just after 1 a.m., the Senate passed a bill that would speed up the process to add housing in the state, including allowing commercial space like vacant strip malls to be turned into new housing units more easily.

The State House of Representatives passed the legislation on Wednesday.

Supporters of the bill said it's not perfect, but they believe it provides a starting point for long term change.

Next, House Bill 8002, An Act Concerning Housing Growth, heads to Gov. Ned Lamont for approval.

He said he will sign the bill into law when it gets to his desk.
