CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The Linn County Winter Overflow Shelter will not open as scheduled due to ongoing renovations, which are funded by more than $1 million in American Rescue Plan money.

The county used federal funding to renovate the Emergency Shelter, a low-barrier facility where homeless individuals can spend the nights during colder months. County leaders stated that the shelter was scheduled to open on Saturday; however, construction delays have pushed back the opening date.

The renovations include a new overhead sprinkler system that will allow the county to use the upper floor, increasing usable square footage for people without permanent housing. The county is also adding new lockers in the front intake area of the building on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids.
