As the holiday season approaches, the Salvation Army of McAllen is gearing up for one of its most important traditions — the Red Kettle Campaign.
The campaign kicks off this weekend, and aims to collect $150,000 by having volunteers standing outside of stores and ringing bells to get the attention of shoppers.
“We are in need of the funds to be able to operate year round,” Maj. Frank Zuniga, the commanding officer for the Salvation Army of Hidalgo County, said.
The money will help fund operations – such as the food, kitchen, shelter and social services programs – which helps support local families every year.
But without enough volunteers, some of those familiar holiday bells may fall silent
“We need a lot of volunteers," Zuniga said.
During the 2024 holiday season, nearly 900 people
