The office in charge of compensating victims of the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire has missed required reporting deadlines, three members of New Mexico’s congressional delegation claimed in a recent letter, making it more difficult for them to oversee the multibillion-dollar program.

“The Claims Office has failed to comply with statutory requirements to report to Congress on its activities, which undermines our oversight responsibilities,” U.S. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández and Sens. Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján wrote in a Nov. 6 letter to Federal Emergency Management Agency Region 6 Acting Regional Director Gerard Stolar and New Mexico Joint Recovery Office Director Jay Mitchell.
