After an unusually mild start to November, winter looks set to arrive with force.

Temperatures are forecast to plunge below freezing next week, with new weather maps showing a massive snow band preparing to sweep across Britain.

Fresh data from WXCharts suggests that by 6am on Wednesday, November 19, a 500-mile snow front will stretch from John O'Groats at Scotland's northern tip right down to the capital.

Some regions could see up to 20 inches of snowfall, whilst the heaviest accumulations are expected across Scotland's coldest northern areas, where the latest modelling suggests up to 39 inches on higher ground.
