Sun Prairie, Wis. (WMTV) -On this day November 15, 1887, the world renowned painter Georgia O’Keefe was born in Sun Prairie.
O’Keefe was the second of seven siblings, and grew up on a farm outside of Sun Prairie.
She was a pioneer in “American Modernism,” creating bold paintings with abstract shapes of landscapes, flowers, and New York skyscrapers.
Later in her life she moved to New Mexico where she would spend the rest of her life. The desert landscapes would be a major influence on her work paining skulls and sand colored landscapes in many of her most recognizable pieces of artwork.
O’Keefe died at the age of 98 on March 6, 1986.
