STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — While the temperature might fluctuate occasionally, the cooler weather and shorter days have arrived. With winter right around the corner, staying inside and keeping warm with your pet can be a welcome change. Conversely, taking them out in freezing temperatures can be very uncomfortable in frigid conditions. But how cold is too cold?

Although it is challenging to make broad generalizations, most dogs shouldn’t experience discomfort from the cold until it drops below 45 degrees. At this point, those sensitive to the cold may start to feel uneasy. Small breed dogs with thin coats and highly young, old, or sick dogs may be at risk if they spend too much time outside when the temperature drops below 32 degrees.
