Although Virginia Tech continues to evaluate multiple options, there is notable mutual interest as the program searches for a new direction.

Virginia Tech dismissed Brent Pry on Sept. 14, one day after a 45–26 loss to Old Dominion dropped the team to 0–3. Penn State followed with its own move on Oct. 12, parting ways with Franklin after 12 seasons in the wake of three consecutive losses. The Nittany Lions’ slide included back-to-back home defeats, capped by a 22–21 loss to Northwestern that stunned the Happy Valley crowd.
