YACHATS, Ore. - A humpback whale has become stranded on the beach after becoming entangled in crab gear.
Volunteer rescuers are actively working to save the whale, which is still alive and vocal. Local crews are calling on community members nearby, or those able to travel, to join efforts in digging trenches and forming a bucket brigade to keep the animal wet until professional rescuers arrive.
A person on the scene managed to cut the crab line, but the whale remains stuck in the surf. Experts are expected to arrive at first light, as they have deemed any earlier response too dangerous.
Low tide occurred around 2:30 a.m., with high tide expected at 9:36 a.m., which may be the next opportunity for a rescue attempt.
As of 1:30 a.m., Oregon State Police were on the scene, requesting that
