Numerous people flocked to the Oregon Coast near Yachats overnight Nov. 15 and early Nov. 16 in an effort to help a stranded humpback whale after posts on social media went viral .

The whale was apparently tangled in rope or line and was stuck on the beach.

So many people had shown up by the early morning of Nov. 16 that Oregon State Police and other officials were asking people to avoid the area and to clear vehicles from U.S. Highway 101.

Rescue officials were expected to arrive at first light and with high tide scheduled for 9:36 a.m., there was hope the whale would be washed back into the ocean.

Overnight, volunteers dug trenches and used a bucket brigade to keep the animal wet, according to a report from KEZI .
