HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. —

The Haywood County Fire Marshal is asking people who live in the region not to burn anything outside right now.

In a statement, he said, "Fire danger is elevated across the state, including here in Haywood County. While there is currently no burn ban, the Haywood County Fire Marshal strongly discourages any outdoor burning at this time due to strong winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures that can cause fires to spread very quickly."

If you must burn, the marshal says:

You must stay with the fire the entire time.

Keep a cellphone on you in case you need to call 911.

Have a way to extinguish the fire immediately, like a water hose or extinguisher.

Only burn natural vegetation in its natural state, not trash, lumber, or building materials.
