TOLEDO, Ohio — Thanksgiving is typically a day to share joy with friends and family. But for many Americans, Thanksgiving can be one of worst days of the year for fire accidents.
According to a 2025 analysis from Safehome.org , Thanksgiving Day sees a 240% increase in residential cooking fires over any other day of the year.
Nationwide, an average of 87,877 residential cooking-related fires happen through out the year, according to the organization. Not only do these cooking fires cost about $570 million in property loss, but they also account for 39% of all residential fires.
Around 4,150 people are injured every year because of cooking fires, according to the report. It is estimated that an average of 470 lives are lost every year because of these fires as well.
