A woman was found dead and a man was detained after a SWAT team entered a Somerville home Sunday afternoon, Nov. 16, following reports of shots fired, authorities said.

Somerville Police arrived at the on Mastogen Drive home around 1:05 p.m. for a shots-fired call and were unable to reach anyone inside. Officers from Bridgewater Township responded to help as additional resources were requested.

The prosecutor’s office said the Somerset County SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiators were dispatched around 2 p.m. and also attempted to make contact before entering the home. Inside, officers found an adult male, who was detained, and later located a deceased woman during a search of the residence.

The man was taken to a local hospital under police guard. Detectives from Somerville Police, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, the Crime Scene Investigations Unit, and the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office are handling the investigation.

The prosecutor’s office said the case is in the early stages of a death investigation and that “no additional details will be released until preliminary confirmation by investigators at the scene and the Medical Examiner’s Office.”
