Two young brothers struck by gunfire that left one of them dead in Newark on Saturday evening were good kids who were apparently caught in the crossfire, their football coach said Sunday.
The boys, ages 10 and 11, were among five victims shot when gunfire erupted around 7 p.m. at the corner of Chancellor Avenue and Leslie Street, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.
The 10-year-old child and a 21-year-old woman were killed and three others, the 11-year-old, a 19-year-old man and a 60-year-old man, were injured.
The boys were walking home from a Lyons Avenue recreation center when they were shot, according to West Ward Hawks youth football coach Kenneth Luckey.
