A contract worker in his mid-20s has died at BlueScope’s Port Kembla steelworks after a falling steel beam struck him.

BlueScope on Monday morning confirmed a fatal incident took place just before 10.30am at its worksite in Port Kembla in NSW’s Illawarra region.

The man was working opposite the number-five blast furnace stockhouse when the accident occurred.

The company’s preliminary assessment of the incident was that a crane that was lifting a beam had fallen and hit the worker.

A spokesperson from BlueScope said the company was "deeply saddened by this tragedy".

"Our immediate priority is supporting our people, the first responders and the family of those involved," they said.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and will provide further information when we are able."
