NEWAYGO COUNTY, Mich. — A shelter in place order has been issued for part of the Newaygo community after a natural gas leak happened Monday afternoon.

It happened at 8390 S. Mason Drive south of M-82 along M- 37. Emergency personnel urges the public to stay away from the scene while crews work to contain the leak. Also do not smoke, light matches or use a lighter if you're in the impacted area, and don't use machinery or equipment until the situation is resolved,

Newaygo County Emergency Services says a strong odor of gas or may be noticed or you may hear a hissing sound until the leak is capped.

Workers are on site and people in the area are asked to follow all of their instructions.

The shelter in place remains until further notice.
